Speak Life

Growing up, I was a teacher’s pet and goodie two shoes. Sometimes the other kids picked on me and called me names because of it and because I was a preacher’s kid. So to prove myself, I decided that I was not gonna be a goodie good all the time. In the 5th grade, I decided that I was gonna start cursing. (Sorry mom and dad if you’re reading this). Other kids my age were using bad words and I had to prove to them that I could be like them. Honestly, it only lasted for about a semester. It was really too much work and my stomach turned every time a kid told me that they were going to tell my parents of this new habit.

Looking back now, I had no idea that I had the responsibility to choose and speak my words carefully. I didn’t fully understand like I do now that life and death is in the power of the tongue. By choosing to using curse words, I was creating destruction in my world with just a muscle.

One of the cool things about God is that when He created us in His image, He gave us the authority to do things that He can do. When the earth was formed in the beginning, it was spoken into existence. God literally spoke life. We, as believers, have the same ability to speak life in our days. We can speak life into our trials. We can speak life into our family, friends, children and spouses. Speaking Life can be encouragement, sharing the Gospel, declaring victory in your circumstance and so much more.

“The tongue has the power of life and death,

and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Proverbs 18:21 NLT

Speaking Life is a Testament of Your Faith

Unless you’re an habitual liar, we often don’t speak things that we do not believe. This is something that I am learning myself. I find myself not speaking life into a certain situation because there’s some fear that creeps in and hinders me. The Bible says, “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” Matthew 17:20. We here this verse a lot in the Christanese world of things, but it really is a reflection of our faith in God. Have you ever held a mustard seed in your hand? I have and it is super tiny. I was expecting a popcorn kernel but it’s smaller than that. God’s not asking much from us. He just wants a declaration of a little faith and He will show up in our lives and do the rest. Nothing is impossible with God. We just have to speak it as a sign of our believing.

Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written,

“I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, 2 Corinthians 4:13 NLT

Speaking Life is a Declaration of Your Future

Ever have one of those days when you’re just not feeling like going to work or really doing much of anything, and you declare that you will have a great day anyway? You’re speaking life into your future. You are choosing to act and live in a positive manner based on your spoken declaration and your future is affected by it. Imagine if you, in the same situation, spoke frustration and dreariness into your day…that would be reflected in your future. “Today is not my day.” Yal, we have the power to affect our future with our tongues. Changing a “can’t” into “can” changes your trajectory. Changing a “might” into “will” changes your future. Changing a “not” into “is” changes your future. Use your tongue to change your attitude which affects your future.

Has there been a time where you spoke life and things turned around for the good? Share it with me and others in the comment section so we can be encouraged by your faith.
