If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
As I continue on this life journey of adulting, the best choice would be to see the future. How cool would it be to see how your life is going to turn out…how c[razy].
Often enough, I find myself at a crossroads. I have to make a decision between two or even three different paths. Which way do I go? How will it turn out? What if I make a mistake and choose the wrong path? If only I could tap into my superpower to reveal to me which way is best.
It seems as if the “easy” crossroads are between obedience to God or disobedience to God. I might not know specifics about the road ahead, but I do know that choosing to disobey God is never the best route. I mean, look at Jonah. But what about those crossroads between one good thing and another good thing?
When I graduated from college, I had the opportunity to choose between two very different career paths. I had a passion for both options. Compensations were discussed, living arrangements were thought out and both options looked promising. I could see God using me in both avenues. So, I prayed and I prayed for God to close one door.
“God, you choose for me because this is too hard. I don’t want to make the wrong decision. I want to do what you want me to do.”
He gently said to me, “Aaqila, where is your faith?”
I believed that God would be with me. However, I did not want to step out on faith…I did not want to step at all. Couldn’t life be a little easier? If only one option is available, then I can be sure that I’ll be okay right? Wrong. James 2 tells us that faith without works is dead. I had to make take a step.
Ok, God here we go…
Here are some things I learned:
Privilege
God has given us free will even with good things. I use this example a lot, but think of the Garden of Eden. God commanded them to stay away from one tree, but they had the choice to pick from a plethora of trees. God declares things to be good and gives us the opportunity to choose by using the wisdom and discernment that He promises through the Helper or Holy Spirit.
Patience
I learned not to make the decision impulsively. Sometimes in the waiting and praying, facts or issues may be revealed to you and the path eliminates itself. Remain patient, trusting that what God has for you is for you. Your decision does not need to be a race.
Peace
After making your decision, pray for peace. God promises that His peace will guard your heart and mind. Following Him will not lead to a life of regret or disappointment. His peace will affirm your direction while you are acting inside of His will. (Philippians 4:7)
People
We have a cloud of witness or other believers who have taken a step, jump or leap of faith. Look to the Scriptures. Look to your family. Look to your community. Ask them about how their faith has been strengthened because of the tough crossroads.
…Well God, that whole faith thing wasn’t so bad. It was pretty dope!
Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.
– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
