The Thanksgiving holiday has officially passed. It was short enough that I did not completely get out of my daily routine, but long enough to tell my body that it needs a break. At the Rasheed’s house, we celebrate on Thursday and Friday. Friends and family gather and we have sooooo much food and even more fun, which means I’m in No Sleep, Texas. Christmas is around the corner and I’ll probably catch up on sleep then right? You’re right…silly me, I’m an adult now.
We’ve coined this term “adulting,” and quite frankly, it sucks. I truly blame my parents and older relatives because they made being an adult look like so much fun. However, I’ve learned the following:
- The next time I will see spring break is when I have a kid who is privileged to have this freedom.
- I should’ve been a teacher to enjoy summer break.
- Holidays do not stop car payments, other bills or more importantly, the 9-5.
- An 8 hour work days seems like double the 7 hour school day.
- If it’s not one thing, it’s another.
Life is happening. The world doesn’t stop spinning. We don’t get a break from life and it seems like we don’t get rest.
OK, we might be fortunate with a really great nap after church or 8 hours of sleep at night, but the mental and emotional rest seems to be a farfetched concept.
Maybe we are tired because we are doing everything on our own. Hmmm…
Matthew 11:28-30 says:
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
What an amazing promise from the Lord. This is encouraging because it gives me hope that rest is attainable…in this lifetime lol. When I was younger, I thought that the yoke referred to in this passage was the egg yolk. I guess I could’ve understood the difference if I knew how to spell at that time. However, this is a figure of speech taken from the use of oxen, and hence signifying labor, bondage or affliction. The yoke joins two oxen together to do the work as desired. The yoke is heavy and probably extremely uncomortable.
Many of us are carrying this burden daily. Well, there’s a solution. Jesus commands us to bring that weight to Him. His yoke is easy and liberating. I am a daddy’s girl. The security, comfort and peace that comes from being in my daddy’s arms allow me to rest. God offers us the same security. We no longer need to agonize over the woes of life. Now, this promise doesn’t mean that bills will pay themselves. We still have responsibilities. We are exchanging the yoke of our affliction for the easy yoke of Christ, so there is still work to be done. When we become yoked with Christ, all things are possible. There is rest for our souls, AND we have a partner to continue this journey with.
We like to refer to the story of creation because on the seventh day, God rested. But when was the last time you rested with the Creator? He’s ready to give you what you need.
