Super Lowkey

super lowkeyThis tee describes me so well. I come from an outgoing family. I have my outgoing moments. I can be loud and entertaining. I can appear to be anything but shy. I was a thespian in high school and I have a love for the stage. But the side of myself that I love the most is when I’m super lowkey.

low–key (adjective) : quiet and relaxed : not very emotional or noticeable

Although I love this state, as a believer, it is not a state that I can take when it comes to sharing our faith. I cannot be quiet. I cannot be relaxed. I cannot go unnoticed. I cannot be lowkey.

My junior of college, I had the opportunity to room with three other ladies in a suite. One was a Muslim. One was agnostic. One was a Sikh. At first, I was going to remain silent about my beliefs. After all, I didn’t want to offend anyone because of our differences. I left the dorm every Sunday morning for church and Thursday for Bible Study. Should I vocalize what I am doing? Should I invite them? Should I tell them the Christian organizations that I am involved in? Perhaps it would be best to stay silent.

Thankfully, after prayer and advice, the Lord gave me an opportunity to share my faith. I was not scrutinized and I surely was not chastising. They were not converted to Christianity and I was not rejected. But a seed was planted in them. And the confidence to evangelize and have the Gospel conversation grew in me. We shared the suite for a full school year and they were some of the best roomies that I had. I didn’t have to downplay Jesus to maintain a neutral environment.

We’ve heard the Great Commission before, yes?

“Go therefore and [lowkey] make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Nah.

Christ did not command us to be lowkey about our faith.

But it’s definitely easier to be lowkey about sharing the Gospel right? If I just hint to that the fact that I love God, then I can still be accepted by the world. If I don’t share the good things that the Lord has done for me, then my coworkers won’t look at me differently. If I don’t talk about the value of the love and grace that kept Christ on the cross, then other Christians won’t think I’m doing the most.

What are some reasons that you tend to be lowkey about sharing your faith?

  • Rejection
  • Fear
  • Feeling Unqualified
  • Complacency
  • Unbelief

We cannot let this things hold us back from walking in obedience. This is not a compromise that we can afford to make. I mean, Jesus didn’t lowkey die for you right?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16

Don’t get me wrong, I do not believe that we should force our beliefs down the throats of others. I do not encourage going around chastising others for not accepting our truth. We have the perfect example to ever walk the earth, Jesus Christ, show us how to share the truth about the kingdom in Heaven with love and not judgement.

This week, share the good news of Christ with someone. See what the Lord does for them and watch and He works within you.
