• Speak Life

Growing up, I was a teacher’s pet and goodie two shoes. Sometimes the other kids picked on me and called me names because of it and because I was a preacher’s kid. So to prove myself, I decided that I was not gonna be a goodie good all the time. In the 5th grade, I decided that I was gonna start cursing. (Sorry mom and dad if you’re reading this). Other kids my age were using bad words and I had to prove to them that I could be like them. Honestly, it only lasted for about a semester. It…

  • To Die For

I love Rom Coms/romance movies like The Notebook or The Holiday or Crazy Stupid Love or Hitch or Never Been Kissed…the list could go on and on. I am very much a hopeless romantic and the cheesiness of it all really makes me happy. My favorites are when the girl who seems to have it all together really likes the guy completely opposite from herself. Maybe he has a hard past or has done something that he thinks is so unforgivable. He tricks himself into thinking that he can hide who everyone thinks he is because of his past and…

  • Be Still

I am very much a daddy’s girl. I am also a little independent. There are times when I try to do things that I simply cannot do to prove my independency. Eventually I fail and run to my daddy. As a daddy’s girl, I know he can fix anything…even when he can’t lol. In those situations, I know I would have avoided some struggle if I went to my daddy first, but that requires yielding my control and I don’t wanna. But alas, I run to him and he tells me to be still and watch him fix the problem.…

  • Your Story

Every [wo]man has a story…what’s mine? Meeting new people, especially other believers, is sometimes a challenge for me. Among the first round of questions is usually something like this: “So, what’s your story?” I typically sit there stunned and puzzled on where to even begin. Such a broad question doesn’t always generate a specific answer. Do I tell them about my parents? They have some cool stories. We are seriously trying to get my dad’s story on Netflix one day…if anyone has any connections *wink wink.* But no, they asked about me…hmmm. I grew up thinking that I didn’t have…

  • Fearless

Last week I saw Wonder Woman. Shoutout to DC for finally making a decent movie, but I digress. Like so many women around the world, Wonder Woman’s bravery channeled a feeling within that made us confident that we could conquer the world…or at least any obstacle. To others, she sounded crazy.  Her mission seemed impossible. But she did not let fear stand in her way. She endured. She won. She was fearless. I too could be like Wonder Woman. But I have so many fears. Things I am afraid of: Heights Fire Roller Coasters Drowning Failure Snakes Dying Rodents Rejection…

  • Seeking Jesus

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13 Have you ever searched for Jesus? Growing up I thought that Jesus could be found in a literal geographical location. I sincerely thought the Garden of Eden was hidden in the jungle somewhere and Jesus was there waiting for me to find him. We have already established my weirdness right? Cool.  There have been so many times where I sought the Lord so that He could change instead of me. In my flesh and in my ignorance, I wanted the Lord to change…

  • Power

It’s still Black History Month, right? Ok…just checking. Black History Month is one of my favorite months of the year. Growing up, we would always do the wax museum in school and learn about heroes like Garrett A. Morgan, Madam C.J. Walker, W.E.B. Dubois, and so many others. Movies like Our Friend Martin had me thinking I could time travel. We participated in Black History plays surrounding Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Little Rock Nine and other pivotal moments. We memorized portions of Dr. King’s speech and poems by Langston Hughes. We learned Negro Spirituals in choir and the significance of the Underground…
